Are You Making These Security Mistakes When Surfing The Web?
Does your computer ever run slow, act
strange, or crash unexpectedly?
Do you get a ton of pop-up ads, even when you are not actively surfing the web? Has your browser been “hijacked” and replaced with another unknown browser?
If so, your computer is infected with malicious spyware and viruses that can alter your computer, steal your confidential information, and disable the use of your PC, leaving you without a
computer for hours or days while you get it fixed.
And what’s worse – most times, once your computer has been hit by these threats, it has to be completely wiped in order to fix it. Unless you have a backup image (a snapshot of everything on the PC,
exactly as it is), it will never quite be the same again. You may lose software programs that you downloaded, but don’t have the disk for, your icons won’t be where you remember
those to be, and “little”
things like your default printer could be all messed up. It can be a nightmare.
One big misconception many computer users have about spyware and viruses is that these programs somehow invaded their computer through no action or fault of their own – in most cases, this is simply not true.
Malware, spyware, and viruses are usually a result of some action taken by the user (you or an employee that uses your computer).
Remember, cyber criminals are incredibly clever and gain access to your computer via some of the most innocent and common activities you are performing; that is
why it SEEMS as though it is your computer’s fault when in reality, YOU are unknowingly giving these hackers and auto-loading devastating programs free access to your computer.
Deadly programs to avoid are free “enhanced” web browsers, screen savers, and just about any “cute” programs you come across that are free to download. Always read the terms and conditions
before downloading ANY program to look for clauses that allow them (the software vendor) to install spyware programs on your computer.
Unfortunately, installing programs is not the only way a hacker or malware program can access your computer. If you do not have the most up-to-date
security patches and virus definitions installed on your computer, hackers can access your PC through a banner ad on the web that you accidentally clicked on or through an e-mail
attachment that you opened.
Hackers have also figured out ways to install malicious programs on your computer via your
IE web browser, EVEN IF YOU DIDN’T CLICK ON ANYTHING OR DOWNLOAD A PROGRAM. Microsoft is constantly providing “patches” to their operating system software, and all it takes is one
missed update to leave you completely vulnerable.
That’s why it’s so important to have someone in charge of updating your computers and server DAILY. An innocent web search by an employee can end up
bringing on a host of viruses, hacker invasions, or other evil attacks that end up costing you hundreds or thousands in lost wages and repair costs. The best way to make sure you’re
protected is to enroll in a 24/7 maintenance and monitoring plan, like our
Rest Assured Service Plans™.
With a service like this, you get the latest patches and updates automatically, plus a knowledgeable IT staff to resolve anything the updates missed,
particularly third-party applications whose updates are just as critical.

SonicWALL Identifies Growing Threat of
Cybercriminals Attacking News Searches. Over 284 Top Search Terms
attacked in a 7 day period with 6600 Malicious URLS; Threat team
outlines tips to protect against searching threats.
Cybercriminals are continuing to attack Google's top
search items. In one week, more than 284 top search terms have been
attacked by more than 6600 malicious URLS. The threat team has found up to
nine of the top 20 search terms are under attack at any one time. To help
individuals defend against these types of threats, SonicWALL's threat
research team has identified certain search terms that have returned the
greatest number of malicious sites and has developed several tips for
combing through search terms.
"Cybercriminals use whatever is at their disposal to
spread malware. In this instance they are launching attacks against Google's
top search terms that identify the most popular stories of the day," said
Deepen Desai, Lead Malware Researcher, SonicWALL. "These criminals are now
going after these top search terms using their knowledge to insert malware
infected websites almost immediately after people show interest in a
particular news site."
Using social engineering tactics, cybercriminals are
able to jump onto the latest news events ranking high on Hot Search to draw
more traffic to their infected websites. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
tactics are then used to make the websites show up higher in the search
results, thus making it more likely that individuals will click on them. The
counter offensive to remove these threats is on-going. However, some sites
have remained within search results for a number of hours before being
removed.
Recent and topical infected searches include:
-
A search on "elinor burkett" within a 24 hour period between March 8th
and 9th presented 40 unique malicious URLs appearing in Google search's top 30 results.
-
A search on "the new
tenants" on March 8th presented 56 unique malicious URLs appearing in Google search's top 30 results.
SonicWALL suggests you remember the following tips when searching for a news event:
-
Be diligent when clicking on the links that show up in search engine results. Be sure to look at the URL before you click on it. Quite often the
legitimate sites show up with complete readable sentences in their description whereas the malicious sites show up with jumbled keywords. -
If you do click on a malicious website, quickly get out of it. Most of the malware found
redirect to fake antivirus websites that pretend to discover malware on
a computer and offers to sell antivirus software that will clean it up.
-
Make sure that your antivirus is up to date. Use defense-in-depth by layering protection, having antivirus both on the gateway and the client.
-
Steer clear of any kind of video codecs or protection software executables downloads prompted by most of these sites.
-
Do not execute any files that come through e-mail attachments.

3 Ways To Stop The Spam Invasion!
Check out these 3 ways you can reduce this costly and time-sucking e-mail pest from hindering your company's productivity:
-
Don't Respond To Or Opt Out Of Spam E-mails -- Don't assume
these are legitimate communications! If you try and opt out of these lists,
you are basically verifying your e-mail address to the spammers, ensuring
even MORE junk e-mail than before. And you certainly don't want to respond;
that will make you an even bigger target! -
Use Your Junk Mail Folder
-- Microsoft Outlook will automatically separate spam into your junk mail folder so you can spend less time sorting through your inbox. It also reduces your chances of opening a malicious junk message
which may contain a virus or worm. The downside of this folder: you might have to periodically check it to make sure no "good" messages are sitting in there. -
Get A Spam Filter -- Whether the spam filter you choose is a hardware appliance, software you install locally on your network,
or a third-party spam filter that cleans and captures messages before they arrive on your network, having one is important. Over time, you can "train" these filters to know which messages to
block and which to keep.
Do You Need Help Finding A Good Spam Filter?
We partner with best-of-breed when it comes to email security and can
set you up with the solution that best fits your company's needs. Let us
help you rid your computers of those annoying, time-consuming, and unsolicited junk messages finally
and forever.
