The Wackiest Laws On The Books!

Did you know that in New Hampshire it is illegal to tap your feet, nod your head, or keep time to the music in a tavern, restaurant, or café? Or that state law in Colorado allows people to rip the tags off pillows and mattresses, despite dire warnings not to do so.

And in Alaska, while it’s legal to shoot bears, waking a sleeping bear for the purposes of taking a photograph is prohibited.

In Fairbanks, Alaska, it is considered an offense to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose. Sterling, Colorado has a law on the books that states that cats may not run loose at night without being fit with a flashlight.

Did You Know?…

The animal with the largest brain in proportion to its size is the ant.

Temperature and crime are correlated. Many more crimes are committed in the hot summer months than in the cold winter months.

Ancient Egyptians regarded the heart as the center of intelligence and emotion. They believed the brain to be totally insignificant, and during mummification, the brain was removed…thinking it would not be needed on the “other side.”

New Year's Resolution - Optimize Your Network

In the last few days of December, people look back at their previous year and look forward to the next. Because of this, the age-old tradition of declaring a New Year's resolution came about in an effort to improve yourself in the new year.

Each year, 45% of people make New Year's resolutions such as "become healthier," "spend more time with family," "quit smoking," or "get out of debt." Why not resolve to hiring a Full Service IT Service you can depend on? Or, if you currently have IT support, you can resolve to take your technology to the next level, or evaluate your current network, which will reveal conflicts, security loop holes, and other flaws in your network.

So, what's your resolution for 2010?

Happy New Year from IntegrIT Network Solutions, Inc.!

How long can you afford to have your email down?

Businesses today rely more and more on email to communicate with their clients, vendors, and employees. Email is so ingrained in the way we do business today, that we just take it for granted it will be available and can retrieve it as we need it.

But what happens when it is not available?  Or, what happens when you are frantically trying to retrieve an email that contains critical, time sensitive data pertaining to an RFQ you are trying to get out before the end of the day?

Before you attempt to answer either of these questions, consider this:

  • A 5,000 employee health insurance company in the Midwest estimated it lost $3 million in productivity and business during an eight-hour outage, according to MessageOne, after the data center manager, giving a tour to his family, flipped what he thought was a light switch that turned out to be an ill-placed control for an entire bank of servers.

  • A prominent, high-tech law firm has wood frame office buildings on its Palo Alto, California, campus, one of which had to be shut down and fumigated because of a termite infestation. Nobody could get into the building, which so happens to house the firm’s regional data center and email servers. While they were prepared for outages, termites were never part of their disaster recovery plan.

The answer is simple. Email has to be up all the time, everywhere. Email downtime exposes companies, especially those subject to strict regulation, to legal ramifications. Say the company's email goes down and your employees turn to Hotmail or Gmail accounts – if that email ever gets subpoenaed for discovery, it will be hard to find.

The horror stories range from the typical – Network failures, database corruptions, and power outages – to the downright bizarre.

In a survey commissioned by MessageOne, 48% of companies said they had major email outages within the last six months, and half said their last major outage lasted longer than three hours. Yet only 8% of those companies had email continuity plans, only 29% use data replication or mirroring to protect email servers, and just about half have tape backups for email.

For more information on how to ensure your email is always available even if your mail server is down or to request a free audit of your email continuity plan, send an email to needhelpnow@integrit-network.com.

Computer Tip of the Month

Take care of your computer and it will last longer – Give it a physical Checkup Once a month!

Just as important as making sure your computer is free of spyware, viruses, and keeping it clean on the inside, is keeping it clean and healthy on the outside. Here are some tips to keep your computer safe from its external environment:

  • Good Ventilation -- Place your computer system in a cold and clean environment so that the ventilation hole in the monitor can let the monitor cool.  Don’t place objects on the top of the monitor, doing so could block the ventilation holes and result in overheating.

  • Clean Environment -- Dust can go into your casing and cause a lot of problems. Generally it keeps the components inside the computer from cooling down properly. Eventually you will either have to dust the inside of your computer or have a professional clean it for you. To help limit this you should keep dust out of the computer. Keep your computer in an area that has little dust accumulation or build up. Wipe down the outside of your computer at least once a week to avoid dust collecting and working its way into your computer.

  • Drinking and Eating -- Avoid eating and drinking over the keyboard as eatables and drinks liquidity can damage your keyboard. However, everyone is guilty of munching and typing, and too often the results rattle around just beneath the keys on your board. Buy a compressed air can. First it's best you turn the computer off. Shut it down and turn the power switch off. Then take a compressed air can. Use it to clean off any dust or food crumbs inside your keyboard. Using a compressed air can allows you get between the keys, where a lot of dust and debris have built up.

  • Heat and Cold -- Be careful about heat and cold atmosphere where you have placed your computer. Heat is very hazardous to your computer and it may cause failure of hardware.

  • Moisture -- Avoid moisturized environments for your computers. Moisture can damage your commuter hardware and its performance can be degraded because moisture creates a Zink layer on silver-made components of your computer.
